Obviously the longer you engage with coaching, the more you can achieve, but can a 20 minute conversation help you find answers to a specific questions?

I have worked as a career coach at the JobsExpo in Galway for the last two years. Attendees are provided with a mini session of 15 - 20 minutes to discuss their main issue with employment and job search. You might think that nothing can be achieved in such a short time, but these are a couple of examples of messages I received from attendees:

"Thank you so much for your time yesterday. I have been very unhappy in my job and have decided to leave. Having spoken to you, I realise now that it is not just the work I'm not happy with, and that the workplace and the company are not a good fit for me. I haven't done any research into these aspects of potential employers up to now, so might have ended up in a similar situation. I do not want a future where I'm dreading going to work. I know I want a different type of work, but I now know I want a different type of workplace also.  I am very uncomfortable in a crowded, noisy space that is competitive, high pressure, and unsupportive. Now that I know what I don't want, I can start working on what I do want. I will remember what you said about looking after my sense of self and respecting who I am. Thank you"

"I spoke to you at the Jobs Expo last week and I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for your time. I still have to long way to go with finding my ideal job but last week I was feeling very stressed and confused. Your kind and reassuring manner helped to put me at ease and assure me that the right job is out there somewhere. Thank you very much for your time and your help. Kind regards"

20 minutes won't give you all the answers, but it will provide you with questions to ask yourself that can lead to those answers over time. You might have a lightbulb moment or even several lightbulb moments in that 20 minutes. This is the joy of active listening by a coach. I hear what you're saying and what you're not saying. I'm not bombarding you with opinions and advice, or waiting for you to stop talking so I can start. I help you with where to look, but I don't tell you what to see. Every one of those 20 minutes is active and achieving something, even if it's only feeling completely heard and validated with an opportunity to think out loud in a non judgemental space. Imagine what could be achieved in a series of full sessions!
